Witness: the face and voice of memory
With the he fall of the National Socialist regime after World War II, the division then reunification of Germany in 1989 gave rise to the present Federal Republic of Germany. These events shape not only the national borders, but also the laws and fundamental values of German society. One way to remember events of such significance is to capture the memories of those who lived through them. As a photographer, I chose to do this with a visual and narrative portrait of a Berlin witness.
Klaus Antonius Blanke – An East-West German Portrait
Antonius grew up in a Catholic family in Ruhlsdorf, a small village in the town of Teltow, in the former East Berlin. He studied architecture in the western part of the city before the Berlin Wall was built. Since Antonius had witnessed the transformation of Berlin during the first years of the Cold War and into reunification, he was a valuable source of information for me. Through interviews and excursions in Berlin with Antonius, I was able to trace this transformation of the city through the eyes of someone with first-hand insight. In the course of our interviews, I learned that he was a child during World War II and because he lived adjacent to the Berlin Wall he was socialized both in East and West Germany. Experiencing these parallel worlds is also part of my own biography. My mother grew up in Mecklenburg (then East Germany) and moved to Hamburg in West Germany before the Berlin Wall was built, where she completed training as a nurse.
In September 2013 I decided to do a photographic portrait of Antonius Klaus Blanke to capture the flavor of Berlin between Word War II and into the Cold War through his eyes. To accomplish this goal Antonius and I visited his 1938 birthplace in Berlin and the places of his childhood and youth in and around the former East Berlin. Some of the photos taken during our excursions, along with comments and stories by Antonius about this period are realized as a book project.
Klaus Antonius Blanke - Eine deutsch-deutsche Biografie
Anfang 2000 habe ich im Tübinger Künstlerbund den ehemaligen Baubürgermeister Antonius Blanke kennengelernt, mit dem mich seither eine langjährige Freundschaft verbindet. Antonius Blanke zog 2010 nach 33 Lebensjahren in Tübingen in seine alte Heimat nach Berlin zurück. Im Sommer 2011 zog ich von Süddeutschland nach Berlin, sodass wir uns in großen Abständen immer wieder in Berlin treffen und austauschen konnten. Unter anderem unternahmen wir gemeinsam Fahrten durch die Stadt, und so lernte ich diese auch außerhalb meines Kiezes allmählich besser kennen. Antonius wuchs in einer streng katholischen Familie in der DDR auf und studierte noch vor dem Bau der Mauer im Westteil der Stadt Architektur. Da er den Wandel Berlins nach dem Zusammenbruch und während der ersten Jahre des Kalten Krieges hautnah miterlebt hatte, wurde jeder Ausflug durch die Stadt für mich eine Reise zu den Spuren dieses Wandels. Im Laufe dieser Ausflüge stellte sich heraus, dass Antonius sein erstes Lebensjahr unweit meiner Wohnung in Neukölln verbracht hatte. Später wuchs er dann in Ruhlsdorf, einem kleinen Straßendorf und Ortsteil der Stadt Teltow im Landkreis Potsdam-Mittelmark auf. Im Laufe seiner Erzählungen erfuhr ich, dass er den Zweiten Weltkrieg noch als Kind erlebt hatte, und während der Teilung Deutschlands sowohl im Osten als auch im Westen sozialisiert wurde. Das Erleben der parallelen Welten von Ost- und Westdeutschland berührte wiederum Punkte meiner eigenen Biografie: Meine Mutter ist mit drei weiteren Geschwistern in Mecklenburg aufgewachsen und noch vor dem Mauerbau in den Westen nach Hamburg gezogen, um dort eine Ausbildung als Krankenschwester abzuschließen. Von meinen unzähligen Besuchen in meiner Kindheit besitze ich ein sehr reales Bild von dem untergegangenen Staat DDR, sodass mich Antonius´ Lebensgeschichte sofort in Bann zog. Kurze Zeit später beschlossen wir Antonius´ biografische Jahre, von seiner Geburt 1938 in Berlin bis zu seinem Wegzug 1969 in die Umgebung von Hamburg, fotografisch festzuhalten. Zu diesem Zweck suchten wir gemeinsam die Stätten seiner Kindheit und Jugend in und um Berlin auf.
