Zeitzeugen: Gesicht und Stimme der Erinnerung
Mit dem Untergang des nationalsozialistischen Regimes nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und der Teilung und Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands im Jahr 1989 entstand die heutige Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Diese Ereignisse prägen nicht nur die nationalen Grenzen, sondern auch die Gesetze und Grundwerte der deutschen Gesellschaft. Eine Möglichkeit, an Ereignisse von solcher Bedeutung zu erinnern, besteht darin, die Erinnerungen derer festzuhalten, die sie erlebt haben. Als Künstlerin habe ich mich dafür entschieden, dies mit einem visuellen und erzählerischen Porträt eines Berliner Zeitzeugen zu tun.
Klaus Antonius Blanke - Ein ost-west-deutsches Porträt
Antonius wuchs in einer katholischen Familie in Ruhlsdorf, einem kleinen Dorf in der Stadt Teltow, im ehemaligen Ost-Berlin auf. Vor dem Bau der Berliner Mauer studierte er im Westteil der Stadt Architektur. Da Antonius den Wandel Berlins in den ersten Jahren des Kalten Krieges und bis zur Wiedervereinigung miterlebt hatte, war er für mich eine wertvolle Informationsquelle. Durch Interviews und Exkursionen in Berlin mit Antonius konnte ich diese Transformation der Stadt mit den Augen eines Menschen nachvollziehen, der sie aus erster Hand kennt. Im Laufe unserer Gespräche erfuhr ich, dass er während des Zweiten Weltkriegs ein Kind war, und da er direkt an der Berliner Mauer wohnte, wurde er sowohl in Ost- als auch in Westdeutschland sozialisiert. Das Erleben dieser Parallelwelten ist auch Teil meiner eigenen Biografie. Meine Mutter wuchs in Mecklenburg (damals Ostdeutschland) auf und zog noch vor dem Mauerbau nach Hamburg in Westdeutschland, wo sie eine Ausbildung zur Krankenschwester absolvierte.
Im September 2013 beschloss ich, ein fotografisches Porträt von Antonius Klaus Blanke anzufertigen, um das Flair Berlins zwischen dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und dem Kalten Krieg durch seine Augen einzufangen. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, besuchten Antonius und ich sein Geburtshaus in Berlin von 1938 und die Orte seiner Kindheit und Jugend in und um das ehemalige Ost-Berlin. Einige der Fotos, die wir bei unseren Ausflügen gemacht haben, werden zusammen mit Kommentaren und Geschichten von Antonius über diese Zeit als Buchprojekt realisiert.
Witness: the face and voice of memory
With the fall of the National Socialist regime after World War II, the division then reunification of Germany in 1989 gave rise to the present Federal Republic of Germany. These events shape not only the national borders, but also the laws and fundamental values of German society. One way to remember events of such significance is to capture the memories of those who lived through them. As an artist, I chose to do this with a visual and narrative portrait of a Berlin witness.
Klaus Antonius Blanke – An East-West German Portrait
Antonius grew up in a Catholic family in Ruhlsdorf, a small village in the town of Teltow, in the former East Berlin. He studied architecture in the western part of the city before the Berlin Wall was built. Since Antonius had witnessed the transformation of Berlin during the first years of the Cold War and into reunification, he was a valuable source of information for me. Through interviews and excursions in Berlin with Antonius, I was able to trace this transformation of the city through the eyes of someone with first-hand insight. In the course of our interviews, I learned that he was a child during World War II and because he lived adjacent to the Berlin Wall he was socialized both in East and West Germany. Experiencing these parallel worlds is also part of my own biography. My mother grew up in Mecklenburg (then East Germany) and moved to Hamburg in West Germany before the Berlin Wall was built, where she completed training as a nurse.
In September 2013 I decided to do a photographic portrait of Antonius Klaus Blanke to capture the flavor of Berlin between Word War II and into the Cold War through his eyes. To accomplish this goal Antonius and I visited his 1938 birthplace in Berlin and the places of his childhood and youth in and around the former East Berlin. Some of the photos taken during our excursions, along with comments and stories by Antonius about this period are realized as a book project.
